India partners with Diehl Defence for local production of Vulcano precision artillery ammunition

By Defence Industry Europe

German defence firm Diehl Defence and India’s Reliance Group have entered into a strategic partnership for guided artillery ammunition. The cooperation follows a 2019 agreement and aims to introduce local production in line with the Indian government’s Make in India initiative.

At the centre of the collaboration is the supply of Vulcano 155mm long-range precision-guided artillery ammunition to the Indian Armed Forces. Reliance Group will act as the main contractor for the delivery of this ammunition to the Indian military.

The Vulcano ammunition is designed to enhance the Indian Army’s artillery capabilities with precise strikes at ranges exceeding 70 kilometres, when fired from guns with a 52-calibre barrel length. This precision is achieved through a combination of laser guidance and GPS satellite navigation.

It is expected that more than 50 percent of the Vulcano production will involve the Indian defence industry. This level of local participation supports India’s goal of building a self-reliant defence manufacturing sector.

The two companies are also jointly working on expanding India’s defence production infrastructure. In collaboration with its German partners, Reliance Group is constructing the Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City (DADC) in the Watad Industrial Area in Ratnagiri.

Once completed, the DADC facility is planned to manufacture 200,000 units of artillery ammunition annually, along with 10,000 tonnes of explosives and 2,000 tonnes of propellant charges. The initiative underscores the long-term commitment of both firms to strengthen India’s defence capabilities and industrial base.
