The Ministry of Defence of India has signed a contract worth $248 million with Rosoboronexport (RoE), Russian Federation, for the procurement of 1,000 HP engines for T-72 tanks. The agreement covers engines in fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi knocked down conditions to support the modernisation of India’s armoured fleet.

A key aspect of the deal includes a Transfer of Technology (ToT) from Rosoboronexport to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory), Avadi, Chennai. This initiative will enable the integration and licensed production of engines within India, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” policy in the defence sector.

The T-72 tank remains the backbone of the Indian Army’s armoured forces and is currently powered by a 780 HP engine. Upgrading the fleet with 1,000 HP engines is expected to significantly enhance the tanks’ battlefield mobility and offensive capabilities, strengthening India’s defence preparedness.

This procurement marks another step in India’s ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers while bolstering domestic manufacturing in the defence sector.
