Indra Group has signed two new contracts with the European Space Agency (ESA) to enhance Europe’s space surveillance capabilities and satellite navigation systems. The agreements were formalised at ESA’s 50th anniversary ceremony, held at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain.

The company will upgrade the S3TSR space surveillance radar to its V2 version, improving the detection of low Earth orbit (LEO) objects and strengthening the protection of satellites and space assets. This radar, one of the most advanced in Europe and the world, is part of Spain’s contribution to the European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) system.

This enhancement will enable the radar to detect a metal sphere with a diameter of 44 centimetres at approximately 1,000 kilometres distance. The modernisation aims to shield European satellites from both accidental threats like debris and intentional threats such as interference, damage, or espionage.

Indra Group has also signed a contract under ESA’s NAVISP programme to develop an advanced navigation receiver for LEO satellites. This receiver will capture and process high-precision Galileo signals, enhancing positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) both in space and on Earth.

The technology will support more accurate, reliable and resilient services for vital sectors including transport, communications and infrastructure. “As part of the company’s commitment to ensuring the security of all citizens, space and its synergies with defence are a strategic priority for Indra Group,” said José Vicente de los Mozos, CEO of Indra Group.

“Together with ESA, we will continue advancing along this decisive path to strengthen Europe’s security and strategic autonomy in the space domain,” de los Mozos added. The contracts were signed by Luis Mayo, Director of Indra Space, reinforcing Indra’s close relationship with ESA.

Through these agreements, Indra Group consolidates its position as a key supplier of cutting-edge space technologies applied to defence. The company is expanding its role in developing the full lifecycle of space projects, from satellite design and manufacturing to mission operation.
