Italy’s Ministry of Defence has announced the start of the delivery and acceptance process for the SAMP/T NG and GRIFO air defence systems. In the future, these systems are intended to form the backbone of the anti-aircraft capabilities of the country’s land forces.

For the SAMP/T NG programme, Italy has ordered ten systems comprising mobile launchers for MBDA Aster surface-to-air missiles and Leonardo Kronos radar stations. The system is designed to counter airborne targets, including manned and unmanned aircraft as well as cruise and ballistic missiles, and will fill capability gaps created in part by systems transferred to Ukraine.

The GRIFO system is a short-range air defence solution armed primarily with MBDA CAMM-ER missiles. According to current declarations, the Ministry of Defence has contracted six systems with an option for three more, which will help restore capabilities lost following the withdrawal and transfer to Ukraine of Skyguard Aspide missile systems, while both new systems are to be integrated into a common command and control subsystem so that their combat capabilities complement each other.
