The U.S. Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Italy involving Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and related equipment. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the proposed deal on the same day.

Italy has requested to purchase thirty AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs, forty AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs, and two AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM guidance sections. The package also includes control section spares and containers, spare and repair parts, as well as consumables and accessories.

Additional support comprises weapon system maintenance and software, technical documentation, personnel training, and both classified and unclassified software delivery. Engineering, logistical, and technical services from U.S. government and contractors are also included in the agreement.

The total estimated cost of the proposed sale is $211 million. The U.S. has confirmed that the principal contractor for the programme will be RTX Corporation, based in Tucson, Arizona.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the statement said. It added that the sale would help Italy counter current and future threats with modern air-to-air munitions.
