Japan receives first F-35 fighters at Komatsu Air Base, marking key defence milestone

Komatsu Air Base on Japan’s western coast has become the latest hub for the country’s advanced air power with the arrival of its first F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft. This delivery, which took place on 26 April 2025, represents a historic moment for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).

The base, Japan’s only fighter facility on the Sea of Japan coast, welcomed three F-35 jets equipped with the latest TR-3 upgrades. One of the aircraft served as the centrepiece during a formal handover ceremony that marked the official integration of the fifth-generation fighters.

“It is the beginning of a new chapter for Japan’s F-35 program,” stated JASDF Lt. Col. Ogino “VR” Masaki, Japan’s F-35 Program liaison officer. “Now we have taken a great step closer to building a robust and layered structure to fully leverage the most advanced fighter jet in the world into our defense capabilities and readiness.”

The F-35’s cutting-edge technology is expected to significantly strengthen Japan’s ability to operate in an increasingly complex regional security environment. Lt. Col. Masaki noted, “The security environment around the Indo-Pacific is becoming more dynamic and unstable, and the significant refinement and enhancement of our air power is an urgent requirement for Japan.”

Masaki added that the aircraft will enhance Japan’s strategic posture and commitment to regional peace. “The F-35 plays a key role to not only strengthen our air defense posture, but also to contribute to Japan’s ability to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.

The delivery is the result of extensive preparation, international cooperation, and sustained investment. Japan’s path to F-35 integration has involved close collaboration with other operating nations and key demonstrations of operational readiness.

In 2024, Japanese defence officials observed F-35 operations aboard the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour near Japan’s shores. Subsequently, the Izumo-class destroyer JS Kaga hosted U.S. F-35s off the coast of San Diego in tests to strengthen interoperability.

The ceremony at Komatsu symbolised the culmination of these efforts and reinforced the partnership between Japan, the global F-35 community, and the F-35 Joint Program Office. This fleet signals a new era in Japan’s air defence and its long-term commitment to a stable Indo-Pacific.
