Klein Marine Systems to supply synthetic aperture sonar for Saab’s AUV62-MR platform

By Defence Industry Europe

Klein Marine Systems has revealed a major development partnership with Saab Kockums AB to supply advanced Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) hardware for Saab’s latest AUV62-MR platform.

The AUV62-MR is a next-generation autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed specifically for mine countermeasure (MCM) operations. This collaboration is part of a contract awarded by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), signalling a significant advancement in underwater defence capabilities.

The AUV62-MR will support large-area seabed mapping, object detection, and covert reconnaissance. It aims to enhance operational safety and efficiency while minimising resource use and reducing risks to naval personnel.

“This SAS technology, co-developed with Saab Kockums, was first unveiled at REPMUS 2024—the world’s largest Maritime Unmanned Systems exercise,” Klein Marine Systems stated. “This innovation reflects our continued commitment to delivering precision sonar solutions for mission-critical operations.”

The partnership highlights a growing emphasis on autonomous systems in maritime security and underlines the importance of international collaboration in defence technology. Klein Marine Systems described the development as “Big News”, underlining its strategic significance to the company and the sector.
