KNDS demonstrates second prototype of next-generation Leopard 2A-RC 3.0 main battle tank

The Franco-German defence company KNDS has unveiled the second prototype of its next-generation main battle tank, the Leopard 2A-RC 3.0 (Prototype PT02). The presentation took place at the Klietz military training area.

The new design represents a significant evolution of the Leopard 2, featuring an unmanned turret and a reconfigured crew compartment. All three crew members – commander, driver and gunner – are positioned inside the hull, similar to the Russian T-14 Armata and the American Abrams X.

Its compact turret profile reduces the likelihood of detection on the battlefield. The use of an unmanned turret and new materials has lowered the tank’s combat weight to under 60 tonnes.

The Leopard 2A-RC 3.0 is armed with a 120 mm smoothbore gun capable of a rate of fire of 18 rounds per minute, and it can also be fitted with a 140 mm gun. This configuration offers improved mobility without loss of firepower.

The prototype integrates a 30 mm remote weapon station, a Spike LR anti-tank guided missile module, and an unmanned aerial vehicle. It is also fitted with the Trophy active protection system and reactive armour on the front and sides.

The tank measures 7.95 m in length (11.17 m with gun), 3.73 m in width and 2.4 m in height (2.84 m with periscope), with a ground clearance of 0.5 m. Powered by a 1,500 hp engine, it can reach a top speed of 65 km/h and has a road range of 460 km.
