This is the first time the French land defence leader has signed such a comprehensive agreement for 8×8 armoured vehicles. The partnership includes the transfer of technical expertise in aluminium armour and local production of the VBCI Mk2’s welded structure.
Designed to meet the Hellenic Army’s operational needs and potentially those of other European forces, the cooperation is expected to boost equipment readiness. It also reflects a growing Franco-Greek defence relationship and a wider effort to reinforce European defence autonomy.
PHILOCTETES, named after the legendary Greek archer of the Trojan War, represents a modern, independent combat system. The vehicle features a 40mm remotely operated turret similar to that of the French JAGUAR and includes an MMP anti-tank missile system.
It can counter a broad spectrum of threats, from UAVs and aircraft to main battle tanks and light vehicles. The VBCI can transport a full infantry unit and is available in command, ambulance, and recovery configurations.
KNDS France highlights the proven reliability of the VBCI platform, which has been in French Army service for over a decade and continues to evolve. “This strategic agreement supports not only the Hellenic Army but also Europe’s defence industry as a whole,” the company stated.
METLEN brings over two decades of defence sector experience, including its long-standing role as a key industrial partner to KNDS Deutschland. Its Volos facility already handles welded shielding for the LEOPARD 2 main battle tank.
“By partnering with KNDS France, we are deepening our contribution to Europe’s strategic autonomy and expanding our role in international defence manufacturing,” METLEN said. The company has announced a new advanced production unit to be launched by 2026, alongside ongoing upgrades to additional Volos-based sites.
This cooperation comes amid rising calls for greater European defence independence, underlined by initiatives like the European ReArm programme. It also promises to generate highly skilled jobs and drive technological innovation in the region.
