Kongsberg expands Pennsylvania facility with USD 10 million investment

By Defence Industry Europe

Norwegian defence company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has announced an expansion of its production capacity at its remote weapon systems facility in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The move comes as part of a new 10-year lease extension, with plans to invest USD 10 million in infrastructure improvements and hire an additional 20 employees.

The Johnstown facility, Kongsberg’s largest outside of Norway, currently employs over 220 people and has been operational since 2008. It has produced more than 20,000 remote weapon stations and around 100 remote turrets. The expansion will further support production of key defence systems, including the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV-30) gun system.

Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Executive Vice President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, highlighted the strong local workforce’s role in the company’s continued growth, stating that their dedication has been crucial to maintaining high-quality production.

Heather Armentrout, President of Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace Inc., emphasised the importance of expanding production to meet increasing demand due to the evolving global threat environment. The facility also supports the U.S. Marine Corps and Army by producing remote weapon stations and providing repair services.

The investment aims to meet the growing need for sophisticated defence technologies and accelerated delivery timelines.
