The contract was signed with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and is based on technology and solutions developed for the joint Norwegian-German 212CD programme. This programme is being delivered by Kongsberg and TKMS as part of their long-standing industrial cooperation.
The navigation systems form part of a broader modernisation effort led by TKMS, which in June signed a major service contract with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support. The €800 million agreement covers the comprehensive modernisation and support of six German Type 212A submarines over a ten-year period.
The contract includes upgrades of core onboard systems, particularly the navigation system and the command and weapons control system on four older submarines from the first batch. The stated aim is to secure the long-term technological superiority of the German submarine fleet for national and alliance defence tasks.
“This important service contract also strengthens our established and trusting cooperation with the German Navy in the area of maintenance,” said Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS. “As a maritime powerhouse, we will utilize the full range of services offered by TKMS and contribute to the high operational availability and performance of the German submarine fleet with our many years of expertise.”
TKMS remains a key industrial partner to the German Navy, providing services ranging from maintenance and repair to modernisation and logistics support. As prime contractor in submarine construction, the company also coordinates the contributions of numerous small and medium-sized enterprises, supporting long-term industrial value creation in Germany.
