Latvia launches EUR 10 million counter-drone R&D initiative to enhance national defence

The Latvian Ministry of Defence has signed three research and development (R&D) contracts to advance counter-drone solutions. The initiative aims to enhance national defence capabilities and expand Latvia’s independent and competitive defence technology sector.

 

Defence Minister Andris Sprūds highlighted the strategic goals of the agreements, which focus on improving Latvia’s short-range air defence against drones. The contracts also support the development of European counter-drone solutions, reducing reliance on third-country suppliers.

 

 

The R&D contracts have been awarded to Origin Robotics, SAF Tehnika, and Frankenburg Technologies. The projects will focus on developing automated drone interceptors, electronic warfare-based solutions, and guided missile systems for counter-drone operations.

 

 

A fourth project is in the final negotiation phase and will adapt existing National Armed Forces weapon systems for counter-drone roles. This project is expected to be implemented in collaboration with the company WeMPS.

The agreements allow for the involvement of additional partners, including research institutions, NATO or EU member states, and international organisations. The flexible contract structure enables adjustments based on technological developments and lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.

 

 

The projects will be co-funded by the Ministry of Defence and industry partners under a 65/35 investment split, with 65% provided by the defence sector and 35% by participating companies. The total expected investment could reach €10 million, with the potential for further increases as new partners join.

To ensure rapid and secure implementation, the projects will follow the Defence Industry Law, allowing the use of Ministry of Defence-owned infrastructure for testing. The Ministry retains full rights to use the developed technologies while allowing industry partners to market them internationally.
