Industry leaders from Japan, the UK and Italy have formed the GCAP Electronics Evolution (G2E) consortium to design and develop the integrated sensing and communications component of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The agreement builds on trilateral collaboration announced at DSEI Japan in March 2023 and formalised with the signing of a consortium agreement this August.

The consortium brings together Mitsubishi Electric for Japan, Leonardo UK for the UK, and both Leonardo and ELT Group for Italy. It will support Edgewing, the joint venture between BAE Systems, Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd., which serves as the lead systems integrator for the GCAP combat aircraft.

The four companies will deliver the advanced Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects & Integrated Communications Systems (ISANKE & ICS) and provide decades-long Through-Life Support Service. ISANKE & ICS will be central to GCAP, ensuring the exploitation of information in future operational environments and distinguishing the new platform from previous generations of combat aircraft.

The consortium structure ensures delivery within the ambitious GCAP timescales, while supporting accountability, freedom of action and freedom of modification for each partner nation. The leadership team will be based in Reading, UK, close to the GCAP International Government Organisation and Edgewing, enabling close collaboration with government and industry stakeholders.

GCAP Electronics Evolution has committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to advance the security, economic and skills objectives of the partner nations. The consortium will continue to draw on trilateral expertise and resources to enhance security across Europe and the Asia-Pacific for decades to come.
