The letter of intent follows the Ministry of Defence’s selection of the M-346 to address Indonesia’s training and combat capability needs as part of a broader fleet modernisation effort. The programme is intended to replace ageing aircraft, including the Hawk, by leveraging the M-346’s advanced technology and performance.
The agreement also includes localisation of support, maintenance, overhaul and training activities, alongside human capital development within Indonesia. The parties said they will now move to the next stage of discussions with the aim of signing a procurement contract in the near term.
The M-346 F “Block 20” configuration features a cockpit with a large area display, active electronically scanned radar, Link 16 data link, electronic countermeasures and new weapons systems. The platform also integrates an advanced flight training system with ground-based training, live, virtual and constructive elements, and light combat capabilities including air-to-air, air-to-surface and aerial refuelling missions.
Leonardo said the M-346 has logged more than 150,000 flight hours, with nearly 160 aircraft sold worldwide, supporting pilot training for high-performance and next-generation fighters. The aircraft is in service or has been selected by 20 countries, including Italy, where it will also serve as the future platform for the Italian Air Force’s Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team.
