Leonardo to acquire Iveco Defence in €1.7 billion deal to strengthen land capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

Leonardo has signed an agreement to acquire Iveco Defence, a division of the Iveco Group, for a total enterprise value of €1.7 billion. The acquisition will be financed using Leonardo’s existing cash resources and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

This strategic move significantly enhances Leonardo’s position as a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the European land defence sector. It also expands the company’s offering across both tracked and wheeled defence platforms, reinforcing its role in the growing land defence market.

“The acquisition of Iveco Defence represents a key milestone in the execution of our inorganic growth strategy and supports the full implementation of our Industrial Plan,” said Roberto Cingolani, CEO and General Manager of Leonardo. “This transaction reinforces Leonardo’s position as a reference player in the European land defence market, a segment expected to experience sustained growth in the coming years.”

The integration will improve joint commercial positioning by combining the two companies’ complementary product offerings and market access. It will enable the delivery of more comprehensive and integrated solutions to high-potential global defence markets.

Leonardo’s advanced electronic systems – including combat electronics sensors and next-generation turrets – will be integrated into Iveco Defence vehicles. This synergy will enhance the effectiveness of operational solutions and strengthen technological innovation.

The transaction is also expected to create operational efficiencies through shared manufacturing and logistics capabilities. Additionally, it will support the development of new professional skills and promote talent across both organisations.

Leonardo, in partnership with Rheinmetall, will also explore potential future opportunities in the heavy vehicle systems segment. This reflects Leonardo’s broader ambition to expand and diversify its land systems portfolio through strategic collaborations.
