The next-generation 155 mm 6×6 wheeled CAESAR Mk II is regarded as one of the most advanced artillery platforms in the world and has been tested in real combat conditions in Ukraine. The upgraded version includes an reinforced armoured cabin, a more efficient engine, an advanced control system and improved resilience in complex tactical situations, with Lithuanian input into the platform.
“Selection of CAESAR Mk II is an important step in strengthening Lithuania’s defence and a clear signal of a developing cooperation with France,” said Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas. “This advanced system will add mobility and fire power to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, while closer partnership with the French defence sector will strengthen our ties with an Ally.”
Under the contract, Lithuania will receive a full package of logistical and integration solutions, including training courses, simulation systems and spare parts. A parallel industrial cooperation agreement will see KNDS France invest EUR 12 million in building and preparing a maintenance and repair facility in Lithuania, making the country the second largest user of CAESAR Mk II after France.
The project is implemented under the SAFE investment plan, with 155 mm ammunition to be produced in Lithuania from 2027 and fully compatible with the system. CAESAR is one of the few wheeled 155 mm self-propelled artillery systems manufactured in NATO and the EU that has been battle-tested, with Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Estonia, Slovenia, Croatia and Portugal also planning acquisitions.
