Lithuanian Armed Forces conduct first firings with SPIKE LR2 anti-tank missiles

By Defence Industry Europe

The Lithuanian Armed Forces have successfully conducted the first firings of the new SPIKE LR2 anti-tank guided missiles. The firings took place at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė and were carried out by soldiers from the Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion.

This marks a significant step in the modernisation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, substantially enhancing anti-tank capabilities and overall combat readiness. It also bolsters deterrence and defence reliability within the context of NATO collective security.

The SPIKE LR2 missiles, developed by Israeli defence manufacturer Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, are designed to combat tanks, armoured combat units, engineering structures, and other high-value targets. As a fifth-generation, long-range (up to 5.5 km) multi-functional anti-tank guided missile, it features advanced technologies and tactical advantages.

The multi-channel electro-optical targeting system allows the missile to be used in both daylight and infrared modes. It is equipped with new-generation warheads capable of penetrating both active and passive armoured protection, including reactive armour. Furthermore, the system offers two operational modes, providing flexibility to adjust the missile’s trajectory during flight or abort the attack.

In the Lithuanian Armed Forces, these missiles are integrated into the “Vilkas” infantry fighting vehicles, enhancing firepower and enabling effective engagement at longer distances. This modernisation effort offers troops greater flexibility to operate in complex tactical conditions, adapt to evolving threats, and respond efficiently in real combat situations.
