Lockheed Martin secures $233 million contract to deliver full-rate IRST Block II systems

Lockheed Martin has been awarded a $233 million firm-fixed-price contract to supply IRST21 Block II systems and initial spares to the U.S. Navy and Air National Guard. The contract supports the transition to full-rate production following the Navy’s recent declaration of Initial Operational Capability for the system.

The IRST21 Block II is an advanced long-wave infrared sensor that passively detects and tracks airborne targets over extended ranges. Designed to enhance situational awareness and reduce decision-making time, the system helps pilots respond rapidly to emerging threats.

This latest variant features upgraded optics, advanced processors and industry-leading algorithms that extend detection range and support beyond-visual-range missile engagements. It operates without emitting signals, offering strong resistance to electronic jamming in contested environments.

 

 

“IRST21 Block II delivers a game-changing leap in passive warfighting capabilities across multiple platforms,” said Cristin Stengel, IRST21 programme director for Lockheed Martin. “By significantly enhancing the range and accuracy to enable weapon employment in challenging environments, this system ensures pilots remain ahead of evolving adversaries and mission-ready at all times.”

On the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, IRST21 is mounted on the centreline fuel tank nose, complementing the AN/APG-79 radar to remain effective in radar-denied or electronic attack conditions. For the F-15 and F-16, the system is integrated into the externally mounted Legion Pod, bringing sixth-generation targeting to fourth-generation aircraft.
