Lockheed Martin secures contract to support Argentina’s F-16 fighter jets

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Department of Defense has signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin to provide operational support for Argentina’s recently acquired F-16AM/BM Fighting Falcon aircraft. These jets were purchased from Denmark’s surplus stock as part of Argentina’s efforts to modernise its air force.

The contract, valued at up to $266 million, is being carried out through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. An initial payment of $53.2 million has already been made by Argentina to launch the project.

Work under the agreement will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as in Denmark and Argentina, with completion expected by March 2032. The project includes software updates for onboard systems and logistical support for the aircraft’s transfer to Argentina.

Argentina acquired 25 F-16 aircraft from Denmark in April 2023, including one non-operational unit for training purposes. This purchase marks a significant step in rebuilding Argentina’s air force, which has faced decades of decline.

The first six operational F-16s are expected to be delivered by the end of 2024. At the same time, political changes in Argentina have strengthened ties with the United States, leading to increased cooperation in defence matters.

Beyond aircraft maintenance and modifications, the agreement also includes the supply of air-to-air and air-to-ground weaponry.
