Lockheed Martin secures USD 213 million U.S. Army contract for AN/MPQ-64A4 Sentinel radars

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Lockheed Martin a USD 213 million contract for the production and delivery of AN/MPQ-64A4 Sentinel radar systems. The agreement, which includes an undisclosed number of radar units and spare parts, is expected to be completed by September 2027.

Full funding for the contract has been allocated from the U.S. Army budget, ensuring immediate execution of the programme. The AN/MPQ-64A4 Sentinel radars play a critical role in air and missile defence, providing real-time surveillance and tracking data for the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS).

The first production units of the AN/MPQ-64A4 Sentinel were delivered by Lockheed Martin in mid-2022. The radar is equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antenna, enhancing its ability to detect and track low-observable aerial threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cruise missiles.

Developed using technology from the AN/TPY-4 radar, the Sentinel system offers advanced situational awareness for modern air defence operations. Its compact design and wheeled platform allow for rapid deployment to key locations, increasing operational flexibility for military users.
