By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Department of Defense has announced the signing of a contract worth $17,2 million with Lockheed Martin. The contract aims to support Greece's procurement programme for F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.

According to the announcement, the contract covers the provision of “engineering and technical support, programme management services, fulfillment of one-time unique requirements, training, and support for Greece’s integration efforts.” The programme will be implemented through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) mechanism.

The completion date for the programme has been set for May 2028. The signing of the contract follows the agreement made in July 2024 when Greece concluded a deal to purchase 20 F-35A Lightning II aircraft, with a total value of €3.47 billion.

The first payment for the contract will be made as an advance, while the remaining payments will commence upon the delivery of the first four aircraft, which is scheduled for 2028. The aircraft will remain on US territory until 2030 for training purposes.

It is expected that the deliveries will be completed by 2033. Additionally, the contract includes an option for Greece to purchase a further 20 aircraft in the future.

This contract marks the initial step in the implementation of Greece’s F-35 programme, aiming to enhance the operational capabilities of the Hellenic Air Force.
