Luke AFB hosts Belgian Chief of Defence for F-35 Lightning II training engagement

Belgian Chief of Defence, General Frederick Vansina, visited the 312th Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, on 18 June 2025. The visit underlined ongoing cooperation between coalition partners and the U.S. Air Force, with a focus on advanced training and operational airpower excellence supported by the 56th Fighter Wing.

Belgian Chief of Defence, General Frederick Vansina, visited the 312th Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, on 18 June 2025. The visit underlined ongoing cooperation between coalition partners and the U.S. Air Force, with a focus on advanced training and operational airpower excellence supported by the 56th Fighter Wing.

 

During his tour, Gen. Vansina observed air traffic control operations and spoke directly with Airmen responsible for managing the airfield. He later visited the flightline, engaging with the maintainers and operators involved in the 56th FW’s F-35A Lightning II training mission.

“My visit here is about strengthening the bond between our nations and seeing firsthand how Luke Air Force Base operates,” said Vansina. “From the flightline to the tower, the professionalism and precision I witnessed speak volumes about the quality of training and commitment to excellence.”

 

 

Brigadier General David Berkland, commander of the 56th Fighter Wing, welcomed the visit as a valuable opportunity to reinforce allied cooperation. “We welcome Gen. Vansina to Luke Air Force Base, as it reinforces the mutual benefits and strategic importance of our alliance,” he said.

“Such interactions are invaluable for exchanging expertise, enhancing interoperability, and demonstrating our unwavering dedication to cooperative defence efforts,” Brig. Gen. Berkland added. The visit provided Gen. Vansina with key insights into the infrastructure and personnel driving the Wing’s mission success.
