MBDA marks delivery of 2,000th Mistral 3 missile to French defence procurement agency

By Defence Industry Europe

European defence company MBDA has marked a significant production milestone with the delivery of its 2,000th Mistral 3 air defence missile. The missile, produced at the company’s site in Selles-Saint-Denis, France, was officially handed over to France’s Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) on 25 June.

To commemorate this achievement, MBDA hosted a special ceremony, welcoming representatives from the DGA and the French Army’s SIMu. A model of the Mistral 3 missile was presented during the event to honour the occasion.

MBDA stated that this milestone is clear proof of its growing industrial strength in meeting rising defence demands. “This 2.000th Mistral 3 demonstrates concretely the strong ability of MBDA to ramp up and face the increasing demand,” the company noted.

The company highlighted that its investment efforts, both internally and across its supply chain, have led to a fourfold increase in production capacity since 2022. This boost allows MBDA to address current and future operational requirements effectively.

The Mistral 3 represents the latest evolution in a missile series dating back to the early 1990s and has been tested in combat scenarios. Operating in a “fire-and-forget” mode, the system features high manoeuvrability and supersonic speed, enabling quick interception across various threat types.

It is capable of neutralising targets such as aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, fast inshore attack craft (FIAC), and loitering munitions. Its design allows deployment across land, sea, and air platforms, making it highly versatile.

The missile’s recognised performance has led to its inclusion in the European Defence Industry Reinforcement through common Procurement Act (EDIRPA). Under this initiative, nine European nations will collectively acquire 1,500 Mistral 3 missiles through the DGA to strengthen Europe’s air defence capabilities.
