On 20 October, MBDA and Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the integration of the SPEAR air-to-ground missile onto the KF-21 Boramae fighter. The agreement was announced during Seoul ADEX 2025 and marks a key development in the partnership between the two companies.

The new MoU builds on the agreement signed in June 2023 and reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities of the KF-21. The integration of the SPEAR missile will strengthen the fighter jet’s precision-strike functions and increase its mission effectiveness.

The KF-21 is already equipped with MBDA’s METEOR air-to-air missile, and the addition of the SPEAR system will significantly boost its air-to-ground capability. This move combines KAI’s next-generation fighter platform with MBDA’s proven experience in complex weapon systems.

The SPEAR missile offers low collateral damage and precision strike capability, enhancing both survivability and operational range. Powered by a turbojet engine and equipped with a precision effects warhead and advanced multi-sensor seeker, SPEAR is capable of engaging a wide variety of land and sea targets beyond the horizon.

MBDA confirmed: “This is MBDA’s latest capability for providing a low collateral damage precision effect, enhanced platform/weapon survivability, a high load out for increased persistence.” The new milestone further reinforces the strong industrial cooperation between MBDA and KAI.

MBDA stated: “Following the June 2023 agreement, this MoU reinforces the strong partnership between both companies, who have shown dedication and common goal to further explore new opportunities for the integration of new MBDA weapons onto KAI platforms.” The agreement reflects a long-term vision for collaboration in next-generation defence technologies.
