MBDA unveils next-generation submarine-launched Exocet SM40 missile

By Defence Industry Europe

At the prestigious Euronaval event, European missile manufacturer MBDA has revealed the latest addition to its renowned Exocet family of anti-ship missiles. This innovation, the Exocet SM40, is a submarine-launched missile designed to enhance anti-ship and surface warfare capabilities, further solidifying MBDA’s position as the only European company offering such advanced sovereign solutions.

The Exocet SM40 builds on the legacy of the SM39 while introducing significant upgrades to meet the demands of contemporary naval warfare. These enhancements include the ability to launch at any time, under any weather conditions, and amid complex Electronic Warfare (EW) environments – a crucial factor as modern surface ships continue to improve their submarine detection technologies.

Key advancements in the SM40 include the integration of state-of-the-art technologies first developed for the Exocet MM40 Block 3c. Central to these improvements is a new coherent J-band RF seeker and updated missile algorithms that bolster the missile’s capability to identify and discriminate targets in challenging EW scenarios. This innovation ensures operational superiority in complex maritime engagements.

A standout feature of the Exocet SM40 is its extended range, now reaching approximately 120 km thanks to a new propulsion system powered by a turbojet engine. This improvement enhances the stand-off distance, a critical requirement for anti-submarine warfare and self-protection against modern threats. The missile’s advanced propulsion and guidance systems provide an edge when dealing with well-defended naval assets.

To maintain seamless integration and a fast market rollout, the Exocet SM40 retains the proven launch architecture of its predecessor, the SM39. This ensures compatibility with current submarine platforms with minimal modifications required. MBDA has partnered with Naval Group to equip their submarines with this state-of-the-art solution, offering customers a reliable and formidable asset for maritime defence in the coming decade.
