MBDA’s NEODE Systems secures first French Army contract for AI-enhanced Akeron MP

By Defence Industry Europe

NEODE Systems, a start-up launched by European defence group MBDA to develop advanced digital and AI technologies, has been awarded its first contract by France’s Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) on behalf of the French Army. The contract comes less than 18 months after NEODE Systems was founded in January 2024.

The project aims to demonstrate enhanced beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) capabilities of the Akeron MP missile, using MBDA’s AI-powered decision-making aid known as Ground Warden. A demonstration involving a series of missile firings is scheduled to take place before the end of 2025.

These tests will support the future licensing of the Ground Warden system, which is intended to help the French Army respond more effectively to emerging battlefield threats. The integration of AI is expected to improve operational agility and decision-making for land forces.

“NEODE Systems is new proof of MBDA’s agility and our ability to innovate, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence dedicated to optimising our products,” said Eric Béranger, CEO of MBDA. “I have full confidence in NEODE Systems to provide the French Army, and all our customers, with the technology they need to deal with new threats on the ground, quickly and efficiently,” he added.

Laurent Duport, CEO of NEODE Systems, stated: “This first contract demonstrates the relevance of NEODE Systems’ innovative model, which combines agile, short-cycle development involving the end customer at each stage, and disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence.” He added: “NEODE Systems offers the armed forces an unprecedented responsiveness in the defence sector and therefore supports the transformation of the entire ecosystem.”

NEODE Systems focuses on transitioning advanced concepts into operational products through a rapid, adaptable development model. Its commercial approach includes licensing software to enhance the integration of upgrades across deployed weapon systems.

MBDA is a leading European defence group specialising in complex weapons systems across land, sea, and air domains. Jointly owned by Airbus (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%) and Leonardo (25%), MBDA supports national sovereignty and innovation across Europe and its allies.
