Nammo and Ukrainian defence industry form strategic partnership to boost ammunition output

By Defence Industry Europe

Norwegian defence company Nammo has signed a strategic partnership agreement with a major Ukrainian defence firm to expand ongoing cooperation. The agreement aims to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities through increased production of ammunition, components, and materials.

The partnership builds on a previous agreement from August 2024, which enabled licence-based production of 155mm artillery shells in Ukraine for use by Ukrainian forces. This marked the first time ammunition produced in Ukraine was registered with a NATO NSN (NATO Stock Number).

According to Norwegian Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik, supporting Ukraine’s defence industry remains one of Norway’s top priorities. He welcomed Nammo’s decision to deepen its collaboration with Ukraine, highlighting the importance of developing vital military supplies locally.

Nammo’s contribution includes the transfer of technology and expertise, while the Ukrainian partner focuses on scaling up industrial capacity. Norwegian government support has been key in enabling this partnership and other defence-related projects.

Nammo CEO Morten Brandtzæg stated that the goal is to further strengthen Ukraine’s military capability and European security. He described the agreement as a model for long-term cooperation that benefits both nations.

The joint statement was signed with high-level representation from both countries, including Ukraine’s Minister of Strategic Industries Herman Smetanin and Norway’s State Secretary of Defence Andreas Flåm. It also signals interest in future cooperation on mine clearance and disposal operations.
