Navantia completes first static dive of S82 Narciso Monturiol, advancing Spain’s four-submarine S80 programme towards delivery [VIDEO]

Navantia personnel and the submarine’s trials crew carried out the dive. The test assessed hull behaviour, ballast-tank flooding and the vessel’s static stability.

The results will support preparations for subsequent submerged navigation trials. Navantia said the S82 was progressing through the milestones established under its trials programme.

Work is also advancing on the remaining submarines in the four-vessel programme. During July, Navantia installed three diesel generator sets aboard the third boat, S83 Cosme García.

The generators will operate alongside the main electric motor and anaerobic air-independent propulsion system. Together, the components form the S80 submarine’s propulsion system.

“The S80 programme is progressing in line with the agreed schedule, and the second submarine in the series will be delivered soon,” Navantia Chairman Ricardo Domínguez said. “Thanks to the close collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, the Spanish Navy and Navantia, the S80 programme is already making a significant contribution to the strategic autonomy of Spain’s submarine force and to the technological capabilities of our industrial ecosystem.”

Navantia said construction and testing remained on schedule across the programme. The S82 milestone moves the second submarine closer to its submerged navigation phase while work continues on S83.
