Navantia: second S-80 submarine enters the water in Cartagena and moves toward testing phase

The S-82 “Narciso Monturiol”, the second submarine of the S-80 class, is now afloat at Navantia’s Cartagena shipyard as it moves into the final stages of construction and commissioning. The launch followed a long and delicate manoeuvre carried out over several hours with a floating dock and supported by essential tasks and checks to ensure safety inside and outside the vessel.

 

Harbour trials will now begin to verify all systems, including major safety steps such as fuel loading, battery charging, and propulsion tests while moored. Once these activities are complete, the submarine will advance to sea trials, where navigation and diving tests will take place before delivery to the Spanish Navy.

 

 

The S-80 programme will provide the Navy with four conventional submarines fitted with modern capabilities. Navantia remains the Technical Design Authority for the class as the programme progresses.
