New Dutch Combat Support Ship built by Damen in Romania begins sea trials

By Defence Industry Europe

The Dutch Ministry of Defence has announced that the new Combat Support Ship (CSS), the future Zr.Ms. Den Helder, has entered its final stages of development. This morning, the vessel embarked on its maiden sea trials from the Damen Shipyards in Galaţi, Romania. The ship is expected to arrive at its next port of call by the end of next week.

During this initial voyage, the CSS will cover its first nautical miles along the Danube River, the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean. The sea trials will test the ship’s performance in various conditions, remaining within the territorial waters of NATO allies.

Once the trials are complete, the vessel will continue its journey to the Netherlands for final outfitting. Damen facilities in Vlissingen and Den Helder will complete the ship with advanced sensors and weapons systems, ensuring its readiness for deployment.

The Zr.Ms. Den Helder will significantly enhance the Royal Netherlands Navy’s logistical capabilities. “This improves the endurance and operational availability of our naval forces,” the Ministry stated. The ship will play a key role in supporting other vessels by providing fuel, goods, spare parts, and ammunition at sea.

This development aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s focus on safeguarding national and allied territories. The CSS’s capabilities contribute directly to the operational readiness of both the Dutch Navy and its NATO partners. “That is good news for the Netherlands, but also for international partners, such as NATO allies,” the Ministry added.
