The ROEM is noted for being „the first cannon in the world capable of automatic firing,” according to the IDF. It features an automatic loading and laying system, a high rate of fire, and rapid deployment capabilities. The system is based on a modified 10×10 US Oshkosh truck chassis, with a crew cabin at the front and the artillery system at the rear, operated by a crew of three.

The primary armament is a German-made Rheinmetall 155 mm gun with a 52-caliber barrel, capable of firing up to 40 kilometers using conventional base-bleed ammunition. This advanced weapon system boasts a rapid-fire capability of 8 rounds per minute, supported by an automatic loading system. The onboard ammunition capacity stands at 40 rounds.

The Roem is the world’s first howitzer capable of fully automated firing without human intervention. Its automatic system streamlines operation, reduces crew requirements to two or three personnel, and enables efficient fire planning over broader combat zones.

The development of the ROEM highlights Israel’s investment in new military technologies, aimed at transforming the IDF into a superior artillery force. Most of the internal components of the ROEM remain classified, with only a few prototypes in existence. A European variant of the cannon reportedly has a range of up to 80 km, though the Israeli version is expected to have a shorter range.
