The agreement aims to enhance multinational operations in the Nordic region and to intensify cooperation in supporting Ukraine. “We will facilitate multinational operations in the Nordic region by enhancing cooperation in the field of unmanned aircraft systems. We will also intensify Nordic cooperation to support Ukraine,” said Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen.
The initiative reflects the growing importance of unmanned technologies and shared defence capabilities among Nordic countries. “As the technology develops and needs for updates continue, there is every reason for Nordic cooperation in this field. In addition, growing common procurement volumes enable the industry to increase its production capacity, and reduce the countries’ national procurement costs,” Mr Häkkänen added.
Beyond procurement, cooperation will also expand to research and development, training, and information exchange. Nordic procurement of micro-sized drones will take place under the NATO Support and Procurement Agency partnership, while mini-sized drones will be procured under the Danish Ministry of Defence framework agreements.
The Technical Arrangement and related Implementation Agreements were formally signed by the Nordic armaments directors in Helsinki, confirming a coordinated approach to future unmanned systems development and acquisition.
