The Mk44S provides extended range, improved reliability and overmatch, and can fire all NATO-standard 30x173mm ammunition, including Northrop Grumman’s advanced rounds. It can also be upgraded from 30mm to 40mm by changing the barrel and selected components, offering future flexibility for the platform.
Production of the Mk44S is underway at Northrop Grumman’s facility in Mesa, Arizona. Dave Fine, vice president of armament systems at Northrop Grumman, said: “The Mk44 Bushmaster Chain Gun delivers unmatched firepower and reliability in even the most unforgiving conditions. By integrating this proven capability into the Amphibious Combat Vehicle program, we’re equipping Marines with the tools they need to dominate the battlefield and stay ahead of evolving threats.”
The Mk44S is a medium-calibre weapon designed for 30x173mm ammunition and can be upgraded to fire 40mm rounds, supporting use with Northrop Grumman’s programmable munitions. The company states that its manufacturing scale, workforce and continued investment in US infrastructure, research and development, and supply chains underpin its ability to meet current and future national security requirements.
