Northrop Grumman says its Rolling Meadows facility in Illinois plays a central role in advancing electronic warfare, survivability systems and space technologies. The one million-square-foot site, located in northwest suburban Chicago, is the largest defense industry employer in the state.

The company said the facility supports thousands of jobs and contributes significantly to the regional economy. Northrop Grumman currently employs more than 3,000 people in Illinois and reports a statewide economic impact exceeding $2 billion.

Rolling Meadows is one of the company’s most technologically advanced locations. The site integrates development, testing and manufacturing under one roof using advanced digital engineering tools, automation, robotics and precision manufacturing systems.

According to Northrop Grumman, the integrated approach helps ensure the delivery of mission-critical systems that meet demanding customer requirements. The company said the facility’s design supports efficient development and production of complex defense technologies.

The company’s economic footprint in Illinois also extends through its supplier network. Northrop Grumman reported investing $253 million with more than 250 suppliers based in the state.
Employees at the Rolling Meadows site also participate in community initiatives across Illinois. The company said its workforce contributes through donations, volunteer service hours and programs supporting education, career development and military families.

Northrop Grumman described the facility as a cornerstone of Illinois’ role in national security and aerospace innovation. Technologies developed there support a range of defense capabilities used by U.S. and allied forces.

The facility produces electronic warfare systems designed to help detect and counter threats in the electromagnetic spectrum. One example is the Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite, which provides protection for fourth-generation aircraft such as the U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Rolling Meadows also develops aircraft survivability systems that help protect aircraft and crews operating in combat environments. These include the Common Infrared Countermeasures and Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures systems.

The site is also responsible for electro-optical and infrared targeting technologies used by military aircraft and ground forces. The LITENING Advanced Targeting Pod, developed at the facility, enables detection, identification and tracking of targets at extended distances.

According to the company, LITENING systems support missions such as precision targeting, air superiority, close air support and surveillance operations. The technology can also be used for humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions.

In addition to aviation programs, the facility contributes to space-related technologies. Northrop Grumman said these efforts support national security programs and help advance capabilities in the space domain.

Northrop Grumman said its broader manufacturing network supports rapid innovation and large-scale production. The company employs nearly 100,000 people worldwide and operates more than 30 million square feet of manufacturing space.

The company said its investment in U.S. infrastructure, research and development, workforce and supply chains supports the development of technologies needed for current and future national security missions.
