Northrop Grumman says 50mm projectile flight test advances Raid Hunter gun-based air defense system against mass aerial threats

Northrop Grumman has completed an aeroballistic test of a new 50mm projectile for Raid Hunter, advancing development of its gun-based short-range air defense system. The trial validated the projectile’s performance and produced flight data for work on a guided, proximity-fuzed round.

The test rounds were fired from an XM913 Chain Gun. Northrop Grumman said nearly every shot generated high-fidelity data that matched its pre-test predictions and performance expectations.

Raid Hunter is designed to counter large, coordinated attacks involving different types of aerial threats. The company is positioning the system as a scalable and cost-effective option for closing gaps in short-range air defense.

The system combines precision-guided 50mm ammunition with Northrop Grumman’s Bushmaster Chain Gun technology. Its potential targets include cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, short-range ballistic missiles and coordinated drone swarms.

A networked system controller is intended to connect Raid Hunter with sensors and the wider air defense architecture. The platform-agnostic design allows the system to be adapted to different host vehicles and operational requirements.

Northrop Grumman said the combination of precision ammunition, high-rate gunfire and networked control would allow Raid Hunter to engage mass mixed raids. The system is intended to reinforce layered defenses around military bases, airfields and critical infrastructure.

Previously known as the 50mm Gun-Based Air Defense system, Raid Hunter is part of Northrop Grumman’s broader Raid Defense Solutions portfolio. The product family combines kinetic interceptors with AI-enabled command and control, sensor fusion and high-rate firepower.

The portfolio is designed to support faster detection, decision-making and coordinated engagements against high-volume aerial threats. Northrop Grumman said its architecture also provides scope for future upgrades and adaptation to changing operational needs.
