Northrop Grumman to expand use of NVIDIA AI technology for advanced space operations

By Defence Industry Europe

Northrop Grumman has announced the expansion of its use of NVIDIA artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to further develop advanced capabilities for space missions. The partnership includes integrating space-based applications into the NVIDIA Omniverse simulation platform and employing the NVIDIA Isaac Lab framework to support cognitive spacecraft operations.

The defence contractor plans to create end-to-end AI robotics systems designed to perform in highly complex space environments. These developments will support future spacecraft tasks such as autonomous docking, in-orbit servicing, and inspection or repair missions.

In addition to robotics, Northrop Grumman will use agentic AI to automate the entire spacecraft mission lifecycle, including the generation and execution of commands and mission plans. These AI tools aim to deliver new operational capabilities while improving the performance and efficiency of existing spacecraft systems.

“By applying our extensive space knowledge and mission expertise to NVIDIA’s advanced AI technologies, we are poised to deliver innovative and high-assurance AI to enable new, more complex missions, with faster planning and significantly lower operating costs,” said Rob Fleming, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Space Systems.
