Norway deploys F-35 fighters to Poland to guard NATO airspace and support Ukraine

Norway has announced it will deploy F-35 fighter jets to Poland this autumn to strengthen the protection of a key logistical hub supporting Ukraine. The decision is aimed at reinforcing the security of Rzeszów Airport and Polish airspace within the framework of NATO's integrated air and missile defence.

“Norway has decided to send a new contribution to protect the most important hub in Poland for support to Ukraine and Polish airspace,” said Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik. “In doing so, Norway helps ensure that aid to Ukraine reaches its destination and that Ukraine can continue its struggle for freedom.”

The deployment responds to lessons learned from the ongoing war in Ukraine, particularly the importance of effective air defence. “The Russian warfare in Ukraine has shown the value of air defence, and the commitment to a new Norwegian contribution to Poland is highly appreciated,” Sandvik noted.

He emphasised that Norway’s own defence readiness remains a priority while supporting NATO efforts abroad. “We do this primarily for Ukraine and Poland, but it also shows that we stand by our commitments in NATO,” Sandvik stated.
