“The U.S. is Norway’s most important ally, and there is close and wide-ranging defence cooperation between our two countries. This cooperation is essential for Norway’s defence and for the security and defence of the US,” said Prime Minister Støre. He added, “Today, we have had constructive discussions about the security situation in Norway’s neighbouring areas and maritime cooperation between Norway and the US. It is vital for our collective security that we have a common understanding of the challenges in our neighbouring areas.”
During his visit, Støre toured the nuclear-powered submarine USS Virginia and met with its officers and crew. The vessel is designed to detect enemy submarines and conduct intelligence operations.
“The Royal Norwegian Navy and the U.S. Navy cooperate very closely, and this cooperation has been further strengthened in recent years. US presence in the High North and Arctic region contributes to deterrence. US activity in our neighbouring areas is very important for Norway and our safety. An example is the recent visit by the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford to Norway,” said Støre.
The US Naval Submarine Base New London was established in the 1800s and is known as the ‘Home of the Submarine Force’. From this base, submarines and their crews prepare for deployment in the High North.
“Today, I have heard how much the US values Norway as a partner and the importance the US attaches to joint activities in our neighbouring areas. It is clear that this collaboration is of great benefit to both parties,” said Støre.
