Otokar offers over a thousand Cobra II tactical vehicles to Romania

By Defence Industry Europe

In the tender for new 4x4 tactical vehicles issued by the Romanian Ministry of National Defence, only one bid was received. It was submitted by the Turkish company Otokar, which is offering Romania the delivery of over a thousand Cobra II light wheeled tactical vehicles, along with a comprehensive package of industrial cooperation and technology transfer to Romanian companies.

According to Turkish sources, the offer for 1,059 Cobra II vehicles was priced at over 900 million euros. This amount does not include VAT.

Two other companies, Arquus from France and Oshkosh from the United States, withdrew from the tender. However, these firms withdrew from the proceedings and ultimately did not submit bids. Their decision was due to the very challenging financial and technical requirements set by the Romanian Ministry of National Defence.

Furthermore, in the case of Oshkosh, the United States Congress was unwilling to agree to the technology transfer required by the Romanian side.

Otokar’s offer includes Cobra II vehicles in 9 different configurations (armoured personnel carrier, tank destroyer, reconnaissance vehicle, armoured ambulance).
The armament of the Cobra II vehicles can include turrets with 12.7 mm calibre machine guns or 20 mm calibre cannons, as well as guided anti-tank missiles.
