Pakistan confirms acquisition of Chinese J-35 stealth fighters and integrated air defence systems

Pakistan has officially confirmed the acquisition of up to 40 Chinese J-35 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, making it the first international operator of China’s newest stealth aircraft. The deal marks one of Pakistan’s most significant military modernisation efforts in recent years.

According to official government announcements on social media, the acquisition also includes KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft and HQ-19 ballistic missile defence systems. These additions represent a comprehensive upgrade to Pakistan’s aerial combat and defence capabilities.

Pakistani defence officials stated that pilot training is already underway in China, with initial aircraft deliveries expected to begin as early as August 2025. “The aircraft will start arriving in the coming months,” said a senior Pakistani official, noting that Pakistan Air Force pilots are currently training on the J-35A in China.

The J-35A, developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, is equipped with low-observable stealth features, advanced sensors, and multi-role combat capabilities. It is designed to operate undetected by enemy radar systems and was publicly unveiled at the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow.

This acquisition comes amid ongoing regional tensions with India, prompting Chinese manufacturers to reportedly accelerate and offer discounted sales of the J-35 to Pakistan. The move is expected to increase pressure on India to advance its own fifth-generation fighter procurement efforts.

Pakistani defence sources expressed confidence in Chinese aviation platforms, citing recent performance of J-10CE fighters during border incidents with India. “The performance of the J-10CE has been encouraging. It reinforced confidence in Chinese aviation platforms and paved the way for this next step with the J-35A,” the sources reported.

The acquisition also includes KJ-500 AWACS aircraft, which will enhance Pakistan’s radar coverage and battlefield management capabilities. The HQ-19 surface-to-air missile systems will strengthen the country’s ability to intercept ballistic missiles and counter high-altitude threats.
