PATRIOT air defence system intercepted 25 Kinzhal missiles in Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

The Ukraine's Air Force Command has reported a significant achievement in their air defence efforts, successfully intercepting 25 out of 63 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missiles fired by Russian forces since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Yurii Ihnat, the spokesperson for Ukraineโ€™s Air Force Command, confirmed these figures in a statement on Ukrainian television. Ihnat highlighted the crucial role of the PATRIOT air defence systems in bolstering Ukraineโ€™s defence capabilities against such advanced threats.

While discussing the recent Russian missile attacks, Ihnat neither confirmed nor denied the involvement of Kinzhal missiles in the downing over the Dnipro River in Kyiv during the attack on January 2. He also noted the difficulty in identifying the missile type from social media videos.

The January 2 attack marked a significant escalation, with Russia deploying 99 missiles of various types, including 10 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. According to Ukrainian military sources, their air defence units successfully intercepted all 10 Kinzhal missiles during this large-scale aerial assault.
