The White House has published an official proclamation by President Donald J. Trump commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Navy. The proclamation, dated 10 October 2025, designates 13 October as a day of national recognition for the Navy’s historic and ongoing contributions.

The statement recalls how, on 13 October 1775, the Second Continental Congress formally established the Continental Navy in a decisive move to support the American Colonies’ fight for independence. The President notes that “the rising tide of revolution surged from land to sea” as the colonies sought to protect trade, repel invasion, and challenge British control beyond their shores.

President Trump praises the Navy as “the mightiest, most lethal, and most legendary maritime fighting force ever conceived,” acknowledging its role in safeguarding U.S. sovereignty through every major conflict. He honours generations of Sailors who have served with the motto Non sibi sed patriae — “Not for self, but for country.”

The proclamation highlights a 1781 letter from General George Washington, who wrote that “without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious.” Echoing these words, President Trump reaffirms the Navy’s continued importance and pays tribute to the dedication of active-duty and Reserve Sailors, as well as their families.

“I call upon all Americans to honor the Navy’s rich heritage, and the patriotism of all who have served,” the proclamation states. The President concludes with a commitment to preserving the Navy’s legacy and the freedoms it protects: “We will never give up the ship.”
