This development confirms that all variants of the Banshee aerial target, including the more advanced Jet 80+, are now fully qualified for operations at the NAMFI range. QinetiQ will continue to supply a full range of aerial target systems to support the training needs of NAMFI range users.
NAMFI plays a key role in helping European armed forces improve their air defence capabilities and operational readiness. QinetiQ’s target systems are designed to simulate diverse aerial threats, enabling more effective training in rapid threat response.
The Banshee Jet 40+ certification also supports the objectives of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), which aims to enhance missile defence coordination across Europe. ESSI, led by Germany, enables partner nations to train at NAMFI using systems like QinetiQ’s Banshee targets and the IRIS-T SLM missile defence system.
The NAMFI range allows for complex training exercises involving various Air-Breathing Targets (ABTs), including helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, UAVs, and cruise missiles. Simulations can also replicate Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBMs) across multiple ranges, offering comprehensive threat training scenarios.
Spyros Exarchos, Business Development Manager at QinetiQ, said: “With this latest qualification, QinetiQ is proud to offer its entire range of proven aerial and sea surface targets to support Europe’s defence forces in developing the skills and readiness they need to confront modern threats.”
