The aircraft are deployed under the command of the 121 Expeditionary Air Wing, which will conduct enhanced Air Policing within NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission. The operation reinforces the UK’s continuing commitment to Euro-Atlantic and Black Sea security.
The RAF contingent has assumed responsibility for the mission from a departing German Eurofighter detachment. The handover highlights the interoperability and coordination that underpin NATO air operations.
For more than six decades, NATO Air Policing has maintained the integrity of allied airspace around the clock. The mission remains a key component of the Alliance’s collective defence posture.
During the deployment, RAF Typhoons will conduct Quick Reaction Alert duties alongside the Romanian Air Force. Their role will include identifying, monitoring and intercepting any unusual or uncoordinated air activity approaching NATO airspace.
These defensive activities are intended to deter potential threats and reassure NATO allies across the region. The mission also demonstrates the RAF’s ability to rapidly deploy and operate alongside allied forces.
“The deployment of our Typhoons to Romania demonstrates the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to NATO and the defence of allied airspace,” said Wing Commander Sonny, Officer Commanding 3 (Fighter) Squadron. “Working alongside our Romanian partners, this mission shows the RAF’s ability to rapidly project credible air power in support of collective defence whenever and wherever required.”
The deployment also supports NATO’s Agile Combat Employment concept, which focuses on dispersal, adaptability and the ability to operate from multiple locations at short notice. These capabilities enhance operational flexibility, survivability and rapid response during allied missions.
RAF personnel will work closely with Romanian and other NATO partners throughout the operation. Coordination will be conducted through the Combined Air Operations Centre Torrejon in Madrid together with multinational personnel deployed to the mission area.
NATO Air Policing continues to serve as a visible symbol of allied unity and solidarity. The mission contributes to the security and stability of both the Euro-Atlantic and Black Sea regions.
