The Netherlands will deploy a unit of the PATRIOT air and missile defence system in Lithuania for an exercise, the Dutch Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren announced on March 28, shortly after another incident of airspace violation over Poland by a Russian cruise missile.

Raytheon, a business unit of RTX, has secured a USD 529 million contract to deliver a Patriot air and missile defence system to the Netherlands. This agreement supports the replenishment of a Patriot fire unit donated by the Netherlands to Ukraine.

The contract encompasses a single fire unit, which includes a radar system, launchers, command and control stations, and other essential support equipment. This acquisition underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to strengthening its air defence capabilities amid rising security concerns in Europe.

Pete Bata, senior vice president of Global Patriot at Raytheon, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. “The Netherlands’ investment in Patriot ensures collective security and deterrence across Europe,” he stated.

The Patriot system is recognised globally as the only combat-proven ground-based defence capable of countering advanced long-range cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and diverse air-breathing threats. It serves as the cornerstone of air defence for 19 nations, consistently demonstrating its effectiveness in complex threat scenarios.
