RENK supports consolidation of battle tank platforms with new modular HSWL 406 transmission

By Defene Industry Europe

RENK Group AG has launched development of its new HSWL 406 transmission, designed to meet the requirements of future heavy tracked vehicles. The technology will cover platforms weighing between 50 and over 70 tons and is due for first vehicle integration by mid-2027.

The transmission features a modular architecture and an advanced level of digitalisation, aimed at setting new standards in military drive systems. It is intended to address the diversity of vehicle platforms across Europe, which the company says is leading to efficiency losses.

“Very few NATO tracked military vehicles drive, steer or brake without RENK technology. The introduction of a modular battle tank transmission will strengthen the logistical commonality of the armed forces, achieve faster availability of spare parts, and enable cross-platform supply and maintenance,” said Dr. Alexander Sagel, CEO of RENK Group AG.

The modular design of the HSWL 406 allows compatibility with all relevant engine manufacturers and enables multiple configurations. This flexibility makes it possible to adapt to vehicles of different weight classes without altering the overall platform architecture.

“The HSWL 406 is setting standards in the development of propulsion solutions for heavy tracks. Our investment in innovation and modularity reinforces our position as technology North Star by offering our customers future-viable, high-performance and market-ready solutions at attractive conditions,” said Michael Masur, CEO Vehicle Mobility Solutions at RENK GmbH.

The HSWL 406 is based on the ATREX propulsion concept introduced in 2024 and includes fully integrated drive-by-wire functionality. A digital interface will also support future autonomous drive solutions for armoured vehicles.

Initial functional tests are underway, with customer testing and qualification scheduled to follow the first vehicle integration. RENK highlighted the recent completion of its HSWL 076 programme as evidence of its ability to deliver market-ready solutions within two years.
