Rheinmetall secures major contracts for 155mm artillery ammunition

By Defence Industry Europe

Rheinmetall has received substantial new orders for 155mm artillery ammunition from an international client. The contracts, placed through the group’s subsidiary Rheinmetall Denel Munition, are valued in the high double-digit million-euro range.

The agreements include the supply of extended range, full bore (ERFB) 155 mm projectiles, along with propellants and fuses. This reflects the increasing global demand for such munitions amid a tense international security environment.

Dr Frank Dirksen, CEO of Rheinmetall Denel Munition, expressed appreciation for the continued confidence in their technology. “We are very grateful for the trust that our business partners and customers place in our globally proven extended-range ammunition and our technology for long ranges,” he said.

Rheinmetall has been expanding its production capacities since 2022 to address growing demand and aims to produce at least 1.1 million 155 mm shells annually by 2027. The company is one of the world’s leading producers of large-calibre ammunition.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition is similarly scaling up its manufacturing capabilities as global supply cannot currently meet demand. It is also integrating key technological innovations to enhance performance and battlefield usability.

The company is now validating the firing of precision projectiles with a range of 73 km from JBMOU-compatible howitzers. These capabilities are intended to increase both survivability and offensive effectiveness in combat scenarios.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition maintains close relationships with long-standing partners and clients who value its delivery reliability and technical support. Its expertise also helps extend the life cycle and operational value of 155 mm howitzers.

The firm manufactures all energetic and mechanical components in-house, including rocket-assisted and enhanced-effect variants. Rheinmetall Denel Munition anticipates further orders and is continuously adjusting its five-year production plan to match evolving customer needs.
