Rheinmetall has unveiled the GMF140, a 140-metre guided-missile frigate displacing more than 6,000 tonnes. The German defence group plans to offer the design first under a procurement campaign in North America.

The frigate is aimed at NATO and allied navies seeking a new multi-mission surface combatant. Its planned roles include air warfare, ballistic missile defence, anti-submarine warfare and long-range strike.

Rheinmetall designed the GMF140 for blue-water operations in high-threat environments. The ship could also support expeditionary, littoral and coalition missions.

The design can incorporate several US-sourced primary radar options. These would support the detection, tracking and engagement of conventional aircraft, hypersonic weapons and ballistic missiles.

The GMF140 is configured for the Aegis Combat System and 64 strike-length vertical launch system cells. Rheinmetall said the cells could carry air-defence, ballistic missile-defence and land-attack missiles.

The company said the configuration would provide surveillance and fire-control performance usually associated with larger surface combatants. The proposed systems fit would also support operations alongside major allied naval forces.

Lockheed Martin’s CMS330 can be incorporated where required. Its open and interoperable architecture would support the integration of European sensors and weapons.

The anti-submarine warfare configuration includes hull-mounted and towed sonar systems. The design also combines acoustic management with a low-signature hull.

The ship would support embarked US or European maritime helicopters and unmanned systems. These assets would extend surveillance and engagement options beyond the frigate itself.

The planned weapons package includes anti-ship missiles, torpedo launchers and a five-inch main gun. Rheinmetall also lists a laser, close-in weapon system, secondary armament, electro-optical sensors and electronic warfare equipment.

Decoy systems and other defensive sensors would complete the proposed mission package. The final configuration could be adapted to individual customer requirements.

Rheinmetall describes the GMF140 as a digitally integrated and minimally crewed platform. Its design places emphasis on open architecture, future upgrades, NATO interoperability and survivability.

The company is targeting countries modernising their fleets across Europe, the North Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific. A North American campaign is expected to provide the design’s first potential market opportunity.

Rheinmetall may subsequently offer the GMF140 to other allied navies. The company is positioning the ship as an interoperable frigate for air defence, submarine hunting and long-range strike missions.
