The company said the contract value sits in the mid-single-digit million euro range, marking the M270A2 as the seventeenth military platform to adopt the UK-developed Trailblazer system. Seven countries currently use the technology, which has been designed and manufactured in Britain.
Under the upgrade programme, Rheinmetall UK will design and deliver enhanced vehicle vision capabilities tailored to the platform’s requirements. The company noted that Trailblazer is already a mature, software-defined, SIL 2-certified system installed on the Boxer, Challenger 3 and Warrior fleets.
The MoD’s upgraded M270A2 launchers will receive modern vision technology intended to support manoeuvre in complex environments around the clock for both driver and commander. The work includes driver vision sensors, remote side and rear sensors, and installation kits with hardened cabling, switches and protective covers.
Rheinmetall said Trailblazer improves crew effectiveness by extending the vehicle’s field of view beyond the daylight spectrum. The system combines enhanced daylight, thermal and fusion vision to aid navigation, obstacle avoidance, route selection and threat detection, with compliance to SIL-2, (N)GVA and DEF STAN 00-82 standards.
Richard Streeter, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Electronics UK, said: “This latest contract further solidifies Trailblazer as the Driver Vision system of choice for the UK Army. That choice is built on our reputation for delivery of innovative and reliable technologies into the UK MoD. We are delighted to be able to upgrade the UK’s latest MLRS A2 platforms with the very best vehicle vision systems.”
