Romanian industry to begin military drone production in partnership with Periscope Aviation

By Defence Industry Europe

Romanian defence company Carfil, in collaboration with U.S.-based Periscope Aviation, will begin manufacturing military drones in Brașov by the end of 2025. The announcement was made by economy minister Bogdan Ivan during the visit of a U.S. Congressional delegation to Bucharest.

Minister Ivan confirmed that two types of drones are planned for production, though no further specifications were provided. “Drone production will begin in May and will reach serial capacity by the end of the year,” he stated.

The minister also noted that the drones are intended for export as well as domestic use. The development follows the government’s signing of a memorandum for the “Romanian Drone” project, launched in November 2024.

At present, Romania’s largest military drone is a multicopter capable of transporting the wounded from combat zones and delivering ammunition. This unmanned aircraft, which incorporates advanced technology, weighs nearly 300 kilograms and costs several hundred thousand euros.
